WINES The Georgian wine industry has a long tradition of producing wine from more than 500 varieties of grapes grown in Georgia. Vineyards cover more than 60,000 hectares and the average annual grape harvest is approximately 350,000 metric tons. The total annual production of wine is approximately 190-220 million liters. Prior to the Russian embargo, which was imposed in 2006, the industry was producing 63 million bottles of wine on average per year, of which 95 percent was being exported. Current production levels are at 20 million bottles per year with 26 active producers. During 2005, the estimated annual value for wine exports exceeded 150 million US dollars. Wine is produced in the country utilizing both traditional methods as well as modern “European” techniques which results in a wide range of flavor profiles. The most famous Georgian wine brands include Ojaleshi, Mukuzani, Saperavi, Tsinandali, Khvanchkara, Rkatsiteli, Alexandrouli, Usakhelouri, and Tsolikauri. Since the imposition of the Russian embargo, the wine industry has worked aggressively to identify ad develop alternatives markets, particularly in Eastern Europe.
